The problem with "read a verse to unlock"

Plenty of apps will show you a verse before letting you into Instagram. The trouble is that reading a verse on a screen takes four seconds, and a verse that takes four seconds leaves nothing behind. You tap through it the way you tap through a cookie banner.

If the unlock is going to mean anything, it has to cost a little time and a little attention. Otherwise it is just one more screen between you and the feed, and screens between you and the feed are exactly what your thumb has been trained to get past.

Why writing, not reading

Writing a verse out by hand takes three or four minutes. You have to find it in your Bible, read it properly, hold a phrase in your head, and put it down in your own handwriting. That is long enough for the morning reflex to pass and short enough to do before coffee is ready.

It also sticks. A verse you copied out tends to come back to mind at lunch in a way a verse you skimmed does not. The Doorpost is built around that difference: the unlock is a handwritten verse from your own physical Bible, not a line of text on the screen.

What stays locked and what does not

You choose the apps. Most people lock the two or three feeds that eat their mornings and leave everything else alone. Messages, Maps, the camera and your banking app are not the problem, and locking them only makes the whole thing annoying.

The lock resets daily. Once the verse is written, the apps stay open until the next morning, so this is not a timer you fight all day. It is a gate at the start of it.

Compared with iOS Screen Time limits

Screen Time limits are built into every iPhone and cost nothing, so try them first if you have not. Their weakness is the Ignore Limit button. A limit you can dismiss in one tap is a suggestion, and by the second week most people are dismissing it on autopilot.
